Sheepskin seat covers can be a comfortable and natural way to put a new cover on any kind of seat, be it a car, bike, stroller, wheelchairs and more. The sheepskin can be sheared to any length, though most tend to be short to about an inch in length. Some seat covers might not be completely sheepskin as well. They may only have natural sheepskin on the places where the person touches the seat cover and then synthetic materials elsewhere. Most covers though, are sold for the automotive industry. Though there is a fair amount of business making covers for other seats as well. Seat covers are also though to increase the ergonomics of the seat, allowing a person to lessen the stress on certain parts of the body.

Car seat covers made of sheepskin come from sheepskin pelts that have been processed. The pelt is washed, sheared, and sometimes dyed to get the desired color. The length of the shearing of the sheepskin can be anything from one quarter of an inch to over an inch of wool. The most comfortable (but also expensive) kind of wool is merino. Merino wool is regarded to be the softest wool you can get. Wool is also an extremely good natural insulator, wicking moisture away from the skin and keeping the seat a constant temperature year round no matter where the seat is, be it freezing weather or sweltering heat.

There are also completely synthetic imitation car seat covers that mimic the properties of the real thing. But synthetics can be a great alternative for those worried about the health and treatment of animals along with those people who might have a wool allergy but still want the benefits of a sheepskin car seat cover on their seats. Also, some of them that are real wool might have synthetic sides as to cut the cost of the cover to make it more affordable to a wider consumer base. Synthetics are also easier to care for, being able to throw a synthetic seat cover in the washing machine instead of having to dry clean a real sheepskin seat cover.

Seat covers in general are used to protect seats from wear and tear. They are also used for comfort on the part of the person sitting in the seat. They tend to be more common on higher end vehicles where you can find leather seat covers other materials that are more expensive than the fabric used in more common place vehicles.

There are many companies out there that sell sheepskin seat covers for vehicles of any make, model and year. There are also sites where a customer may get individualized and custom covers made. A quick internet search will produce many results on companies that produce these products. But seat covers can also be purchased for things other than automobiles. Companies can make these products that are made specifically for things such as infant car seat covers and bicycle seats. They all share the same properties of comfort, but the ergonomic benefits depend on the size of the cover.

The ergonomics of sheepskin seat covers can be debated, but it is said that they will distribute the pressure of sitting more evenly and away from pressure points on the body. Also, as stated, wool naturally moves moisture away from the body increasing the comfort of the seat.

The cost of sheepskin seat covers can be seen as expensive by some, but well within reason for others. Base packages of simple generic seat covers (for automobiles only) can start at as much as $200. And for custom made seat covers the price can just keep going up to as much as the customer is willing to pay for custom, personalized seat covers.

Overall sheepskin seat covers are a way to add a bit of class comfort, and style to any vehicle or seat. The benefits of real sheepskin make it preferable to synthetics. But synthetics also offer their own benefits, from allergy resistance to being easier to clean. When it comes to the synthetic versus natural debate it is all on the consumer to decide which they want to use. Depending on their preferences and what they are willing to spend.
