Cat Repellent
74There are a few reasons for wanting to repel cats and sometimes using cat repellent is necessary for your most cherished cat. If you have a cat that is scratching furniture or shedding hair on furniture you will want to find a way to stop it. Sometimes tomcats will mark their territory by spraying urine. Even female cats have been known to do this on occasion. Spray from cats leave stains and horrible smells so you will want to find a way to deter your cat from spraying in certain areas. Cat feces pose a threat to pregnant women so if there is a pregnant lady around cats can’t be allowed to poop anywhere. Cats can be unpredictable around small children and babies and may become alarmed and scratch a child. A cat may have a bad habit of using the bathroom in an area like a garden or on your carpet. Cats may try to eat or attack another animal or pet. There are many people allergic to cats. If you have guests coming who are allergic to cats you may want a temporary cat repellent.
Electric Cat Repellents
There are numerous devices that emit ultra high sound waves that effectively deter cats and other animals and at the same time they are not detectable by the human ear. These devices are readily available to the public and can be purchased either online or at fully equipped pet supply stores. Some of these devices will deter dogs and other pets so check the label to see which other animals you will be deterring. There are collars that you can put on your cat that work with a system that is set up in places where you don’t want your cat to go. After a while the cat realizes that there will be an unpleasant shock or annoying noise if it goes to certain areas.
Sprays
Sprays contain either plant or citrus peel extracts. Sprays are quick, convenient, and can be used in a variety of places. Sprays do not give off an offensive odor to people and in general they are not harmful to people or other animals but check the label of your chosen brand to be sure.
You may have success with a spray bottle with plain water in it. Cats have good memories and a few sprays from a spray bottle every time your cat steps paw in the baby’s nursery might just do the trick and teach your cat to stay out.
Sprinkles
Sprinkles sold for repelling cats have urine from animals that cats are afraid of. Sprinkles are good for indoor or outdoor and garden use. Just be sure that you place the sprinkles where small children wont find them and put them in their mouths If you are just trying to repel cats that aren’t yours you can sprinkle your cats used litter outdoors around the perimeter of your house. This will tell other tomcats that the house they are approaching already has a tomcat and they will go elsewhere.
Cayenne sprinkles and citrus peels are good cat repellents. Sprinkle them in and around your yard and garden to keep cats away. You may think twice before sprinkling cayenne in your house though, there are some highly unpleasant effects if cayenne gets in one’s eyes.
Bricks
Laying a flat bed of bricks will keep cats from using the bathroom in garden areas. In areas where there are plants place bricks between the plants.
Dogs
A dog will keep cats away. You must weigh the benefits of caring for a dog that keeps unwanted cats away or just trying to fight off cats on your own.
Plants
There are some plants that cats will steer clear of. Colius Canina also known as Piss-Off plant and Scaredy Cat plant is a plant in the peppermint plant family. Some have had success using this plant as a cat repellent. This plant loves sunlight, once planted it grows and spreads effortlessly and requires very little care.
Fences
A fence will keep stray cats off of your lawn, out of your garden, and out of your house. Make sure the fence goes all the way to the ground and is at least 7 feet high and is made of a smooth wood that a cat can’t grip and climb.
Electric fences can be used to deter cats but these are unpleasant for people if they accidentally lean against, touch or fall into one.
Mothballs
Mothballs also work but aren’t healthy for the environment, people, or cats so consider the benefits and the risks of using this form of cat repellent.
You must remember that cats are not our enemies, they are gentle lovable creatures who love comfort and being close to humans. Think about this when deciding what form of cat repellent to use.

Can you provide some more details about the picture of the fence above? It looks like what I need to prevent the neighborhood cats from coming over the fence into our yard.
I use some wire fencing totally surrounding my garden, works great! But harder to get to my veggies for me too of course! I love my cats though:)
